The official birthstone for the month of February is the stunning purple/violet amethyst. 

The name amethyst is derived from Greek legend and words that mean ‘to prevent intoxication (not drunken)’, it was worn as an amulet against drunkenness. Modern beliefs also regard the gemstone to symbolize courage and inner strength.

Amethyst was long associated with royalty and high officials in the Christian church, due to its intense violet hue, and at one time was considered to be one of the precious stones, along with sapphire, ruby and emerald. Amethyst was reclassified as a semi-precious stone when large deposits were found in Brazil and Uruguay in the first half of the nineteenth century.
